How to Beat the Heat Without Harming the Planet

We all know the struggles of the summer heat. Here are some easy solutions to staying cool in the summer and saving energy without having the A/C blasting!

Use Fans
Seems like an obvious solution, right? But if you use your fans more strategically, they may be more effective at cooling you down. Ceiling fans, box fans, or even DIY ice-bowl-in-front-of-fan hacks can make a room feel cooler without high energy use.

Switch to LED Bulbs
Probably less thought about, but incandescent bulbs generate a surprising amount of heat. LEDs use less energy and keep rooms cooler, which is better for the environment and your body.

Unplug Heat-Producing Appliances When Not in Use
Electronics and chargers generate heat even when idle; unplug to reduce both energy and temperature.

Cook Smart
Don’t use the oven or stove as often to make your meals at home; by making your hot meals outdoors, you can reduce additional indoor warming. Use a grill or make cold dishes like salads or wraps to avoid heating up your kitchen. Great idea for an excuse to host a barbeque!

Open Windows at Night
Let cooler night air in to naturally ventilate your home. Just remember to close them in the morning before the sun beats you to it!

Dress for the Weather Indoors
Light, breathable clothing can keep you comfortable so you don’t feel the need to crank the AC.

Install or Use a Programmable Thermostat
If you do use AC, set it to a higher temperature when you’re not home or at night to save energy.

Close the Curtains or Blinds During the Hottest Hours
Keep sunlight out during midday to naturally cool your home. Blackout curtains or reflective shades work best.

Use Natural Shade
Plant trees or place potted plants near windows to block sun and help cool your space over time.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Staying cool isn’t just about your environment; drink water often and use cool compresses to keep your body temperature down.
