Kelp forests are vital for biodiversity and Indigenous traditions in the Pacific Northwest, serving as food, medicine, and habitat for marine life. Sadly, over 40% of global kelp forests have declined due to climate change and overexploitation. This project, led by Veritree in partnership with Coastal Kelp and the Sechelt First Nations, focuses on restoring kelp forests in British Columbia’s Hotham Sound and Powell River. Using innovative techniques, including bull and sugar kelp seeding on lines and green gravel, the project aims to restore these critical marine habitats, enhance ocean health, and support Indigenous communities. These initiatives aim to restore over 67,000 square meters of kelp across 25 sites. These projects are designed to create local employment opportunities and engage community members in marine conservation efforts.
