Every Journey Counts: Transport and Climate Change

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and it can feel overwhelming. But the truth is, every decision you make can contribute to a larger collective benefit for the planet. One of the most impactful areas where individual choice matters is transportation.

Transport accounts for nearly one quarter of global CO2 emission, with a significant amount of this coming from road vehicles. However, there are ways you can make a difference without completely overhauling your lifestyle. Here’s how:

  1. Choose Public Transport When You Can
While driving is very convenient it comes at a cost: road congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, buses, trains and trams emit far less CO2 per passenger, and move large numbers of commuters efficiently.
According to the UK Department for Transport, travelling by bus produces over 30% less emission per passenger mile than a private vehicle. Trains are even more efficient, and produce up to 70% less CO2 per passenger compared to cars
By choosing public transport over driving a car, even just a couple times a week, you could significantly cut down your carbon footprint and reduce traffic-related pollution in your community.
  2. Walk or Cycle for Short Trips
Not every journey requires an engine. In fact, over 50% of car trips in urban areas are under 5km, and could be walked or cycled.
Cycling emits zero emissions, improves your health, and saves money. Studies show that cities that promote active transport, such as Copenhagen and Amsterdam, enjoy better air quality, lower noise pollution, and healthier populations.
Walking and cycling may not be feasible every day, so start by replacing just one car trip a week, this will add up!
  3. Carpool When Possible
Sharing a ride reduces the number of vehicles on the road and spreads emissions across more people. If three people share a car instead of it being used by just one person, that’s a 67% reduction in emissions per person for that journey.
Carpooling apps and workplace ride-share programmes make this a really easy option. You could also save on fuel and tolls.
  4. Consider Cleaner Vehicles
If you need a personal vehicle, consider transitioning to a hybrid or electric vehicle. While electric vehicles still have an environmental footprint (from production) they offer zero tailpipe emissions and a lower lifetime carbon footprint than petrol or diesel; cars. They are also cheaper to run, and if charged with renewable energy, can cut your driving emissions even further.
  5. Fly less, Travel Smarter
Air travel is one of the most carbon-intensive activities. A single transatlantic flight can emit nearly one tonne of CO2 per passenger- more than some people emit in an entire year.

If you can, choose trains for domestic or short haul trips, combine trips to reduce frequency, or consider business calls instead of business travel.

Why it all matters
Your transport choices can have ripple effects. When more people opt for sustainable transport it:

  • Pressures governments to invest in greener infrastructure (bike lanes, bus routes, train networks)
  • Encourages companies to produce cleaner, more efficient vehicles.
  • Normalises low-carbon lifestyles, making it easier for others to follow suit.

You don’t have to give up your car entirely or cancel every flight. But shifting even a portion of your travel habits can reduce your footprint and inspire others to do the same.

Next time you plan a trip – ask yourself:

  • Can I walk, cycle, or take the bus?
  • Can I share this ride?
  • Is there a greener option available?

Because in the fight against climate change, every journey counts.
